Learn to Scuba Dive While Studying English in Boracay

Boracay is one of the few places in the world where you can study English in the morning and learn to scuba dive in the afternoon. The island is a well-known dive destination, with warm water and dive shops along the beach, and our school is minutes from the sea. This guide explains how to fit a beginner dive course around your English classes, how to choose a dive shop and what to know about safety.

Paradise English does not run dive courses. You book your diving directly with a dive shop of your choice; this article simply helps you plan.

Why learn to dive on Boracay?

  • Warm water all year. The tropical sea around Boracay is comfortable to dive in, and you don't need a thick wetsuit.
  • Dive sites close to shore. Boats reach many sites around the island in a short ride, so a dive fits into half a day.
  • Plenty of dive shops. Boracay has many dive centres, so you can compare and choose one that suits you.
  • English practice. Dive courses are taught in English everywhere, so your dive briefings, theory and logbook become extra English lessons.

Conditions change with the weather and season, so some sites are better at certain times of year. The dive shop will choose sites that suit the day and your level. Read about the island's seasons in our guide to the best time to study on Boracay.

Try a dive or take a full course?

There are two common ways to start:

  • A try dive (often called "Discover Scuba Diving" or similar): a short introduction with an instructor, usually in one day. You don't receive a certification, but you find out if you enjoy it.
  • An entry-level certification course, such as the PADI Open Water Diver or the SSI Open Water Diver. It usually combines theory, practice in shallow or confined water and several open-water dives over a few days. When you finish, you receive a certification that lets you dive with a buddy around the world, within the limits of your training.

Course names, structure and length depend on the training agency and the dive shop, so ask exactly what is included before you book.

How to fit diving around your classes

Your English classes run on weekdays, and how much free time you have depends on your course:

  • Budget English: 2 group classes and 1 one-to-one class a day. You study in the morning or the afternoon, so half of every day is free. This is the easiest course to combine with a dive course. 2 weeks cost $452 in 2026.
  • General English: 4 group classes and 1 one-to-one class a day. A balanced day, with time for a dive on some afternoons and at the weekend. 2 weeks cost $616.
  • Intensive English: 7 classes a day. Your weekdays are busy, so plan your diving for the weekends or for the days after your course ends.

There are no classes at the weekend, so the weekend is a good time for open-water dives. Some agencies also let you study the dive theory online before you arrive, which leaves more time for the water. See how a school day is structured in a typical day at Paradise English.

Tip: tell the dive shop when your classes are. A good shop will plan your sessions around your timetable.

How to choose a dive shop

  • Certified instructors. Choose a shop affiliated with a recognised training agency such as PADI or SSI, and ask to see the instructor's credentials.
  • Small groups. Fewer students per instructor means more attention and more confidence underwater.
  • Well-kept equipment. Look at the gear. It should be clean and in good condition, and the staff should check that it fits you.
  • Clear prices. Ask what is included: equipment, boat trips, learning materials and certification fees.
  • Good reviews. Read recent reviews from other divers, and ask your classmates for recommendations.
  • A good feeling. You should feel comfortable asking questions in English. Never let anyone rush you.

Safety and health

  • Medical questionnaire. Before any course you fill in a medical form. Some conditions need a doctor's approval before you dive, so check early, and answer honestly.
  • Don't fly too soon after diving. Diving agencies recommend waiting before you fly, generally at least 12 to 18 hours depending on how many dives you did. Plan your last dive well before your flight from Caticlan or Kalibo, and follow your instructor's advice.
  • Travel insurance. Check that your insurance covers scuba diving, or buy dive insurance.
  • Be well. Don't dive if you are ill, congested or tired, and avoid alcohol before diving.
  • Protect the reef. Don't touch or stand on coral, and choose reef-safe sunscreen.

Planning your budget

Dive courses are paid directly to the dive shop and are not part of your English course. For your studies, add tuition, your room, the registration fee ($130) and the Special Study Permit (about $200). A shared room in our student dorm costs $242 for 2 weeks. Our guide to the cost of a month in the Philippines adds it all up, and our list of things to do on Boracay after class has more ideas for your free time.
