ESL schools in the Philippines: the 2026 list and how to choose

Every English language school worth knowing, by region, plus how Cebu, Baguio, Clark, Manila and Boracay differ, what a course really costs and the questions to ask before you book.

What an ESL school in the Philippines is

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. An ESL school in the Philippines is a language academy for adults and juniors from abroad who come to study English full time, usually for one to twelve weeks, and live in or near the school. Most schools follow the same model: a placement test on day one, a timetable that mixes group classes with one-to-one lessons, a dorm or home stay, and help with the Special Study Permit that every foreign student needs.

The Philippines has become one of Asia's most popular places to learn English because English is an official language, teachers are fluent and affordable, and the one-to-one lessons that cost a fortune in Canada, Australia or the UK are part of the daily timetable here. Paradise English on Boracay Island has been one of these schools since 2005.

Where the ESL schools are

The schools are concentrated in a handful of places, and each has its own character.

  • Cebu: the most schools by far, from small budget academies to large campuses, many of them Korean or Japanese-owned, in a big city with an international airport.
  • Baguio: a cool mountain city in northern Luzon (about 15–23 °C) known for strict, study-first "Sparta" academies with long hours and curfews.
  • Clark and Subic: quieter towns a few hours north of Manila, often focused on business English, junior programs and exam preparation.
  • Manila: the capital, with branches of international chains and the main test centres, but heavy traffic and city prices.
  • Boracay: a small, safe island in the centre of the country with only a few schools, where English is spoken everywhere and the beach is minutes from class. This is where Paradise English is.

Three kinds of ESL school

Price lists look alike, but schools differ a lot in how your day feels. Most fall into one of three groups.

  • Sparta academies: eight to ten hours of class and compulsory self-study a day, a curfew and often an English-only rule with penalties. Fast progress for very disciplined students; exhausting for everyone else.
  • Semi-Sparta academies: a full timetable on weekdays, free evenings and weekends. The most common model in Cebu.
  • International schools with a balanced timetable: four to seven classes a day, no curfew, and free time you are expected to spend speaking English around town. Paradise English is this kind: a Canadian family-owned school with students from over 80 countries, so English is the language you share outside class as well as in it.

Who runs the school matters

Many academies are built for students of one nationality, with staff, meals and marketing in that language. That is comfortable, but it means you speak your own language as soon as class ends. Ask about the nationality mix before you book: the more mixed the school, the more English you use after class.

Ownership also shapes the teaching. Western-owned schools usually mix native English teachers with Filipino teachers; Paradise English has Canadian, Filipino, British and American teachers, and the average teacher has been with us for about nine years.

How to compare ESL schools

Ask every school on your shortlist the same questions and compare the answers side by side.

  • How many one-to-one lessons a day? This is where you improve fastest. Our courses include one to three a day.
  • How big are the group classes? Small groups mean more speaking time for you.
  • Who are the teachers, and how long have they been at the school?
  • What is the nationality mix? One dominant nationality means less English outside class.
  • Is the school accredited by the Bureau of Immigration? It needs that to process your Special Study Permit.
  • Where will you live, and how far is it from class? Our dorm is a 3-minute walk from school.
  • What does the total come to? Add tuition, room, registration, the Special Study Permit and meals, not just the headline weekly price.
  • What do former students say? Read reviews on Google and on independent booking sites, not only on the school's own page.

What an ESL course costs

Most academies sell a package: tuition, a dorm bed and three meals a day in one price, usually in 4-week blocks. Paradise English prices tuition and rooms separately, so you can choose a shared dorm, a home stay, our Annex hotel or a resort, and add school meals only if you want them.

Here is a real example from our 2026 price list. One week of General English starts at $355, and longer stays cost less per week: from 4 weeks, most courses have their biggest discount.

Example: 4 weeks of General English with a dorm room
General English, 4 weeks$801
Student dorm, shared standard room, 4 weeks$308
Registration fee$130
Special Study Permit (SSP)$200
Total$1,439

Not included: flights, meals (optional school lunch $50 per week) and a visa extension if you stay longer than 29 days (about $85). Prices are 2026 rates.

Visa and Special Study Permit

Whichever school you choose, the paperwork is the same. Many nationalities get a free 29-day tourist visa on arrival and extend it in the country (the first extension costs about $85). Every foreign student also needs a Special Study Permit (SSP), about $200, which the school applies for. On Boracay there is an immigration office on the island, so our students never have to leave to sort out their visa.

Questions people ask

What is the best ESL school in the Philippines?

There is no single best school; it depends on your goals. Choose a Sparta academy in Baguio if you want a strict routine, Cebu for the widest choice, and Boracay if you want daily one-to-one lessons, classmates from many countries and an island where you practise English all day.

How much does an ESL school in the Philippines cost?

At Paradise English, 4 weeks of General English with a shared dorm room, registration and the Special Study Permit comes to $1,439 in 2026. Package academies quote one all-in price, so compare the total for your stay, not the weekly tuition.

Are ESL schools in the Philippines good?

Yes. English is an official language, teachers are fluent, and daily one-to-one lessons give faster progress than group-only courses in the UK, Canada or Australia. Pick an accredited school with experienced teachers and a mixed student body.

Do I need a visa or permit to study at an ESL school in the Philippines?

Many nationalities get a free 29-day tourist visa on arrival, which can be extended in the country. Every student also needs a Special Study Permit (about $200), which the school arranges. Check the rules for your passport before you book.

How long should I study at an ESL school?

You can book from one week. From 4 weeks most of our courses have their biggest discount, and longer stays cost less per week, so many students stay a month or more.

Is Paradise English an ESL school?

Yes. Paradise English is a Canadian family-owned ESL school on Boracay Island, teaching English to adults and juniors from over 80 countries since 2005.

What does "Sparta" mean at a Philippine ESL school?

A Sparta program is a strict routine: eight to ten hours of classes and compulsory self-study a day, a curfew and often an English-only rule with penalties. Semi-Sparta keeps the full weekday timetable but frees your evenings and weekends. Paradise English is not a Sparta school: four to seven classes a day, no curfew, and an island where you practise English in your free time.

Korean-run, Japanese-run or international ESL school: which is better?

It depends on what you want after class. A school built for one nationality offers staff, meals and support in your own language, which is comfortable but means less English outside the classroom. An international school with a mixed student body gives you more English all day. Ask any school for its nationality mix before you book.

How do I check that an ESL school is legitimate?

Look for accreditation by the Bureau of Immigration, which a school needs to process your Special Study Permit; a physical address and phone number; a clear price list that includes registration and the permit; recent reviews on Google and independent booking sites; and a listing on more than one international directory.

Can children study at an ESL school in the Philippines?

Many schools run junior programs. Paradise English runs summer and winter camps for ages 4 to 17 in July and August and in January and February, with five English classes and two hours of activities a day, with or without a dormitory stay.

How many lessons a week will I have?

It varies by course. At Paradise English, Budget English has 15 lessons a week, General English and True Beginner English 25, IELTS, TOEIC and Business English 20, and Intensive English 35. Every course includes one-to-one lessons every day.

Is Cebu or Boracay better for an ESL course?

Cebu has the widest choice of schools and big-city life, with many students sharing the same nationality. Boracay has only a few schools, English spoken everywhere on the island, the beach minutes from class and an immigration office on the island for visa extensions. Choose Cebu for choice, Boracay for immersion and balance.

Do ESL schools include accommodation and meals?

Most academies sell tuition, a dorm bed and three meals a day as one package. Paradise English prices them separately: a student dorm three minutes from school, a home stay with meals included, our Annex hotel with a pool or a 4-star resort, and optional school lunch at $50 a week.
