One-to-One vs Group English Classes: Which Is Better for You?
Should you learn English one-to-one with a teacher, or in a small group with classmates? Both work, and they work in different ways. One-to-one lessons fix your mistakes and follow your goals. Group classes give you real conversation, new ideas and the confidence to speak in front of others. The best plan for most students is a mix of the two, and the right mix depends on your level and your goal. Here is how to choose.
What one-to-one lessons are good for
In a one-to-one lesson you have the teacher’s full attention for the whole class. That has some big advantages:
- You speak most of the time. There is no waiting for your turn, so every minute is practice.
- Every mistake gets noticed. Your teacher hears the small errors you repeat without realising, and helps you correct them before they become habits.
- The lesson follows your goal. Exam writing tasks, a job interview, pronunciation, grammar you never understood at school: your teacher plans around what you need.
- It suits shy learners. Many students feel more relaxed speaking with one teacher than in front of a group, especially at the start.
- It moves at your speed. If something is easy, you move on. If it is hard, you stay with it until it makes sense.
The downside is that one-to-one lessons are more expensive in most countries, and you only practise with one person. Real life is full of different voices, accents and opinions.

What group classes are good for
Group classes are where you use your English with other people, the way you will after your course:
- Real conversation. Discussions and role plays with classmates are much closer to everyday English than talking with a teacher alone.
- Many accents and opinions. At Paradise English your classmates come from many different countries. Students from over 80 countries have studied with us, so you learn to understand English spoken in many ways.
- Listening to others. You learn a lot from hearing other students’ questions and the teacher’s answers.
- Confidence. Speaking up in a group is a skill in itself, and useful for work and university.
- Friends and motivation. Classmates keep you going, and they are the people you practise with after class too.
The downside is less personal attention. In a group, the teacher cannot correct every sentence you say. That is why our group classes are small, and why every course on Boracay also includes one-to-one time.
How our courses mix the two
Every Paradise English course mixes small group classes with one-to-one lessons. The difference is how many of each you take every day:
| Course | Group classes a day | One-to-one a day | Lessons a week | 4 weeks (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget English | 2 | 1 | 15 | $591 |
| General English | 4 | 1 | 25 | $801 |
| Intensive English | 5 | 2 | 35 | $1,017 |
| True Beginner English | 2 | 3 | 25 | $957 |
| IELTS, TOEIC & Business | 2 | 2 | 20 | $795 |
Our Bildungsurlaub course for German employees is the exception: it is a 1- or 2-week intensive course with seven group classes a day.
Which mix suits you?
You are a complete beginner
Choose more one-to-one time. In a group, a true beginner can feel lost and afraid to speak. True Beginner English gives you three one-to-one lessons a day, where your teacher builds everyday vocabulary, basic grammar and simple conversation step by step. The two group classes let you start using it with others.
You want steady progress in everyday English
General English is our most balanced course and the choice of most students: four group classes for conversation and practice, and one one-to-one lesson a day for your personal weak points. You still have time for the island in the afternoon.
You need English for work, university or a move abroad
Intensive English gives you seven classes a day, including two one-to-one lessons. It is our fastest route and the most popular choice for career and academic goals.
You are preparing for an exam
Exams reward specific skills, so one-to-one time matters most. IELTS, TOEIC & Business combines two one-to-one lessons focused on your exam with two group classes. Read how many weeks to prepare for IELTS to plan your stay.
You want a holiday with real progress
Budget English gives you two group classes and one one-to-one lesson a day, in the morning or the afternoon, and leaves the rest of the day free for the beach.

Why the Philippines is good for one-to-one learning
In many countries, one-to-one lessons are an expensive extra that few students can afford every day. In the Philippines they are a normal part of the course. Lower costs make daily one-to-one time possible, and English is an official language of the country, so you practise outside class too: in shops, on the street and with classmates.

Tips to get the most from both
- Tell your one-to-one teacher your goal on the first day: a test score, a job interview, more confident small talk.
- Bring your group-class questions to your one-to-one lesson. If you didn’t understand something, ask again there.
- Speak up in group class, even when you are not sure. Mistakes in class are how you learn.
- Use English after class with classmates from other countries. It is free practice.
