IELTS vs TOEFL vs TOEIC: Which English Test Do You Need?
IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC are three of the best-known English tests in the world, but they are not interchangeable. Each one is designed for a different purpose, and the wrong choice can cost you time and money. The short answer: IELTS is widely used for university and migration, TOEFL is a common choice for universities, especially in the United States, and TOEIC is a test of workplace English. Below we explain the differences, how to choose, and how to prepare.
One rule before anything else: always check what your university, employer or immigration office asks for. They decide which test, which version and which score they accept. Test formats, prices and rules also change, so confirm the details on the official test websites before you book.
The quick comparison

These are the general, well-known features of each test. Each test has versions and options, so read the official description of the exact test you will take.
IELTS: university and migration
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is accepted by many universities, employers and governments around the world. It comes in two main versions:
- IELTS Academic, usually needed for university study and some professional registrations.
- IELTS General Training, often used for migration and some work purposes.
Make sure you book the version you need. The speaking part is a conversation with a real examiner, which many students like, because it feels natural. Your result is a band score from 0 to 9, and institutions usually ask for a minimum overall band and sometimes a minimum in each skill.

TOEFL: a university test
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is best known for university admission. It is especially common in the United States, and many universities in other countries accept it too. The main version, TOEFL iBT, is taken on a computer, including the speaking section, where you record your answers instead of talking to an examiner.
The topics are academic: short lectures, campus conversations and reading passages like those you meet at university. If you are comfortable with computers and typing, and your university accepts TOEFL, it can be a good fit.
TOEIC: English for work
TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) measures English in everyday work situations: meetings, emails, phone calls, travel and office life. Employers in some countries use it for hiring and promotion. The best-known version tests listening and reading; speaking and writing are tested separately, so check which one your employer wants.
TOEIC is usually not the right test for university admission or migration. Take it when a company asks for it.

Which test should you take?
- Studying at a university abroad? Check the university’s admission page. Many accept both IELTS and TOEFL; some prefer one. Choose the test whose format suits you.
- Migrating or applying for a visa? Check the official immigration website of that country. Immigration authorities are usually strict about which tests they accept, so never guess.
- Your employer asked for a score? That is usually TOEIC. Ask whether they need listening and reading only, or speaking and writing too.
- You want a certificate for your CV? Cambridge exams such as FCE (B2 First) and CAE (C1 Advanced) are another option, popular in Europe.
- You just want better English? You may not need a test at all. Our General or Intensive English courses build your everyday English faster than exam practice.
How we prepare you
Our IELTS, TOEIC & Business program prepares you for IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, FCE and CAE, or for business English. Each day you have two one-to-one lessons on your exam or professional topics and two group classes in grammar, vocabulary, business, reading or discussion: 20 lessons a week.
Because the one-to-one lessons are built around your test, your teacher can focus on what matters for it: essays and timing for IELTS writing, recorded answers for TOEFL speaking, or business vocabulary for TOEIC.
In 2026 the course costs $356 for one week, $795 for four weeks and $199 for every extra week. Add the registration fee ($130) and the Special Study Permit (about $200), plus accommodation. All rates are on our 2026 price page.
Please note that Paradise English prepares you for these exams, but you take the test itself with an official test provider. Book your test date first, then plan your course to finish shortly before it.
What level do you need to start?
For exam preparation we usually suggest an upper-intermediate (B2) level or higher. Exam practice teaches the test, but it cannot replace the grammar and vocabulary you need for a good score. If your level is lower, start with general English and move on to exam practice later. Our free English level test takes about five minutes.
FAQ
Is IELTS easier than TOEFL?
Neither is simply easier. Many students prefer the face-to-face speaking test in IELTS; others prefer TOEFL’s computer format. Try sample questions of both on the official websites and choose the format you are more comfortable with, if your institution accepts both.
How long are the results valid?
IELTS and TOEFL results are usually treated as valid for two years, but each institution sets its own rules. Cambridge certificates such as FCE and CAE do not expire, though some institutions want a recent result. Always check.
Can I take the test at Paradise English?
No. You book and take your test with an official test provider. We prepare you for it.
Can I combine general English and exam preparation?
Yes. If your level is not yet close to the score you need, you can build your general English first and then switch to exam preparation. Tell us your test, your target score and your date, and we will suggest a plan.
